Cannabis Self-Care Products

Subject

The term Cannabis refers to the plant Cannabis Sativa. It includes hemp and marijuana as well as “active” cannabinoids and other components derived from the plant. The psychoactive cannabinoid, THC, is used for recreational purposes. Cannabis also contains non-psychoactive components, including CBD, which contributes to its medicinal uses – creating a potential market in Canada for self-care products containing cannabis.

Objective

Our goal is to create a legal path to market for non-recreational self-care products containing cannabis or cannabis-derived ingredients regulated under the Food & Drugs Act (not the Cannabis Act). These products would eventually fall under the new Self-Care Products Framework – just like any other cosmetic, non-prescription drug, or NHP treating minor health ailments or providing cosmetic benefits.

Strategy

CA’s strategy includes working with Health Canada and key stakeholders to advance the necessary regulatory amendments to allow for the sale of non-recreational cannabis self-care products in Canada. This could include amendments to the Cannabis Act, Food & Drugs Act, Prescription Drug List and Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist.
