Retail Theft, Resale of Stolen Goods, and Counterfeits – A Growing Industry Concern

CA Looking to Establish a Task Force to Help Address Issue

A number of CA member companies have been expressing their concern with the growing problem of retail theft, the re-sale of stolen and diverted goods through various consumer channels, as well as counterfeit products. As a result, CA has been asked to consider creating an industry task force to better understand the extent of the problem, explore possible industry options and advocacy that can be pursed, and coordinate our sector with other trade associations that share this problem.

On September 5, CA held an “Interest and Scoping Meeting” for members with interest in this issue and to gage willingness to participate in a possible industry task force. The session was well attended by various member companies including their brand, regulatory, legal, and loss-prevention professionals. Informative presentations were received from Rui Rodrigues, Executive Advisor, Loss Prevention & Risk Management at the Retail Council of Canada, and Heather Mullen, Vice President, Law, Kenvue – both which provided background on the issue and a review of the current landscape. Good discussion then ensued about the scope of the issue in the cosmetics personal care products industry (particular with e-commerce), how we might work together to help to address it, and what next steps to take.

The next steps identified include continuing to assess members’ interest in the issue, drafting “Terms of Reference” for a Task Force, reviewing the terms with CA’s Board Executive Committee, and then, as appropriate, engaging more participants in joining the Task Force. It’s not too late to get involved, so if you missed the September 5 session and are interested in joining the dialogue, please email Michele Davis at mdavis@cosmeticsalliance.ca. Please note that you, your third-party regulatory manager and/or external counsel, or other company representatives are all welcome.

Your CA Team will keep members apprised of developments.
