CBC Airs Story About the Accuracy of SPF Labelling – CA Develops Messaging and Helps Manage Issue on Behalf of Membership

Posted Date: 4-March-2026

CBC Marketplace has been investigating a story originating from Australia and New Zealand about SPF testing and labelling accuracy. CA contacted the producer on two separate occasions to set up a meeting to share information about Canada’s regulatory framework, SPF testing methodology, and Good Manufacturing Practices, and we suggested that they reach out to Health Canada for additional perspective as the industry’s regulator. We also drafted relevant messaging for members if they were contacted by the CBC specifically about their products’ SPF claims and lab testing results.

The story was finally published on February 27 both in PRINT and as an aired TV segment.

Overall, the story was fair and factual, and no specific brands were mentioned. The story focused on the variability in the current SPF test method and in how consumers apply sunscreen. The story concluded with the message that sunscreen is just one tool in the defense against sun damage and people need to wear protective clothing, stay in the shade, and not rely exclusively on sunscreens.
