EU Corrigendum on Fragrance Allergens

The SCCS released its preliminary opinion on the safety of Heliotropin (also known as Piperonal) on April 15, 2026. This evaluation was triggered by a proposal to classify the substance as a Reproductive Toxicant Category 1B under the EU CLP Regulation.

The SCCS has concluded that Heliotropin is safe when used as an ingredient in fine fragrances for adults only, up to a maximum concentration of 1.8%. The SCCS noted that Heliotropin is also a skin sensitizer (it can cause allergic skin reactions), which is consistent with its role as a fragrance allergen.
