Hydroxycitronellal:
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has been mandated to review the safety of hydroxycitronellal as a cosmetic fragrance ingredient, focusing on its skin sensitization potential. This 12-month evaluation will determine if the substance is safe up to the maximum concentrations proposed by the industry. To ensure a robust review, the SCCS will utilize the refined Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA2) methodology, which evaluates aggregate consumer exposure across multiple cosmetic product uses.
Glyoxylic Acid:
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has been mandated to conduct a safety review of glyoxylic acid used in hair straightening products at concentrations up to 16%. This 12-month evaluation was triggered by renal toxicity concerns raised by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), which linked the high-temperature use of these products to acute renal failure. The SCCS will specifically assess whether current exposure levels pose health risks to both everyday consumers and salon professionals.
