SAG-CS Opinion on UV Filter Homosalate

Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Update: Sunscreens using the same base formulation as Ultra Violette Lean Screen SPF 50+ Sunscreen

On 21 May 2025, the Scientific Advisory Group on Chemical Safety in Consumer Products (SAG-CS) published its opinion on UV filter homosalate in cosmetic products. SAG-CS concluded that homosalate is safe at a maximum concentration of 10% in sunscreen products. SAG-CS also concluded that the Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was adequately representative of the actual exposures likely to be reached following use of homosalate-containing cosmetic products and was robust and predictive. Therefore, SAG-CS accepted the outcome of the PBPK modelling. Please note that the above conclusion diverges from that of the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS); therefore it is expected to see a different restriction for homosalate in the UK vs the EU (which is only allowed for use at 7.34% in face products with the exception of propellent spray products).
