Prime Minister Carney continued his efforts to expand trading opportunities for Canada with a stop in his ancestral home of Ireland on his way to the G7 meeting in France. Carney’s grandparents emigrated to Canada from western Ireland in the 1920’s in search of a better life across the Atlantic and his visit was warmly welcomed by the Irish government and people.
It is the Prime Minister’s stated objective to build strength at home and diversify Canada’s trading partnerships abroad with European allies being central to this mission as Canada shares history, values, and – increasingly – interests and ambitions with Europe.
Ireland is one of Canada’s closest partners in Europe with bilateral trade having grown nearly 150% over the past decade driven by the Canada- E.U. Trade Agreement and Ireland’s growing importance as an English-speaking entry into the E.U. since the U.K.’s Brexit.
In Dublin, Prime Minister Carney met with Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Micheal Martin to elevate the bilateral relationship including increasing trade and cooperation on matters of mutual interest. A copy of their joint statement is available HERE.
