New Publications Released for Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes And Triterpenoids Group

On March 1, 2025, ECCC announced new publications under the CMP for the Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes and Triterpenoids Substances Group.

The government has released the Draft Assessment and Risk Management Scope documents for 14 Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes and Triterpenoids. The Draft Assessment proposes to conclude that alpha-cedrene, thujopsene, alpha-gurjunene, beta-patchoulene, beta-cedrene, T&T cedarwood oil, amboryl acetate, allantoin glycyrrhetinic acid, and American ginseng extract do not meet any of the criteria set out in section 64 of CEPA. The other 5 substances in this grouping, are proposed to meet the Section 64 Criteria under CEPA, which would mean addition to the Toxic Substances List: Schedule 1.

IMPACTED SUBSTACES

The Risk Management document, provides details of the assessment conclusions and proposed risk management actions. The substances in this grouping meet the criteria for human health concerns. All five substances are proposed for Hotlist inclusion. Cedarwood oil, enoxolone, and mimosa oil are proposed for restrictions within the NHPID.
These proposed actions will impact CA members. The regulatory team will be reaching out to our technical committees for information to help form the basis of comments. If any other members have interest in these substances and safety and/or exposure information that could help refine the risk assessment assumptions, please reach out to your CA team. We are working on plans to consolidate comments now. Comments are due by April 30, 2025. For any questions or further information, please contact your CA Reg Team at regulatory@cosmeticsalliance.ca. As always, information is also available from the Substances Management Information Line at substances@ec.gc.ca.
