IFRA Information Letter n° 1217: Terpinyl acetate multi (EC 904-693-9) classification

IFRA Information Letter n° 1235 - Tonalide - ECHA RAC Opinion as Repr. 1B adopted

ECHA recently ruled on Terpinyl Acetate Multiconstituent (EC 904-693-9), prohibiting a proposed OECD 443 animal test and instead mandating that the Lead Registrant (LR) self-classify the substance as CMR 1B (Fertility and Development) based on existing screening studies (OECD 408, 421, and 414). The LR is challenging this decision by bringing the data to the IFRA CMR&ED WG for a critical review, which is expected to run through 2025 and 2026. The goal is to determine the final GHS classification in time for the January 2027 IFRA/IOFI Labelling Manual. Until then, the LR will not change its current classification (not CMR 1B). Stakeholders were informed of the potential CMR 1B implications, though the LR assures that self-classifications have no direct regulatory impact and the material’s safe use remains unaltered per the RIFM Safety Assessment.
