The European Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, known as the “microplastics restriction,” took effect on October 17, 2023, to limit synthetic polymer microparticles, including glitter, to reduce environmental pollution.
The Commission has provided an Explanatory Guide to aid in the implementation of these new rules, which includes a narrative overview, a Q&A section, and annexes with decision trees and examples.
While the sale of certain types and uses of glitter is restricted, biodegradable, soluble, natural, or inorganic glitter is not included. Additionally, glitter used in cosmetics and detergents has specific transitional periods before the ban applies:
- Rinse-off cosmetics: Until October 16, 2027.
- Leave-on cosmetics: Until October 16, 2029.
- Make-up, lip and nail cosmetics: Until October 16, 2035. However, from October 17, 2031, until October 16, 2035, these products must be labeled indicating they contain microplastics.
