Toronto, Ontario – April 26, 2017 – The Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry & Fragrance Association (CCTFA), the leading Canadian trade association representing the cosmetics and personal care products industry, today announced the official launch of its rebranding to COSMETICS ALLIANCE CANADA / L’ALLIANCE DE L’INDUSTRIE COSMÉTIQUE DU CANADA and new mobile-friendly website (cosmeticsalliance.ca).
The association began in 1928 with the repeal of prohibition in Canada. The government turned to taxation as one means of allowing, yet limiting, the consumption of alcoholic beverages. For the perfumer manufacturers of the day, who used alcohol to make their products, these taxes had to be paid upfront and the eventual tax refund took a great deal of time and effort to get back. In need of a solution, this group – calling themselves the Perfumers Guild – lobbied government which eventually approved an exemption for denatured alcohol (an unpalatable version not suitable for beverages) that the industry was then able to purchase without paying tax or waiting for a rebate.
“It was the first organized representation of the industry and the beginning of what Cosmetics Alliance Canada is today. The Alliance now represents more than 150 member companies and brings together brand members, custom manufacturers, retailers, suppliers, media members, and others. Cosmetics and personal care products are essential to living better, healthier lives and include everything from soap, shampoo, and toothpaste to moisturizer, lipstick, and sunscreen,” says Darren Praznik, President & CEO.
Cosmetics Alliance Canada acts as the principal voice of the industry with government and media, representing members on a wide range of issues and interests. “As the representative of key stakeholders, we work with government towards ensuring that legislation and regulation are effective in meeting public policy goals, such as human and environmental safety, while also being operationally efficient and promoting a healthy industry that is globally competitive. We also communicate with media and other stakeholders on issues related to the industry to provide factual information and to encourage trust and confidence in the industry and in the safety of our products,” explains Mr. Praznik.
Cosmetics Alliance Canada has grown over the years and offers valuable services such as their Beauty Specialist Certification Program which equips beauty advisors with important information on ingredient/product safety, as well as an Export Certificates Program which facilitates international trade for Canadian business by providing certificates of free sale for exports of Canadian-made products to over 75 countries.
Most recently, Cosmetics Alliance Canada has acquired Cosmetics Magazine and its associated event-based properties – the Cosmetics Outstanding Service Awards and the Canadian Beauty & Fragrance Awards. These industry-based properties provide Cosmetics Alliance Canada with an effective vehicle to reach beauty professionals and educate consumers.
