Call for Action by July 31st – Call for Interest to Defend Natural Complex Substances Containing Acetophenone

Posted Date: 16-July-2025

Open Consultation on Proposed Changes to the Contraventions Regulations

The European Federation of Essential Oils (EFEO) launched a call for interest to form a consortium to defend the continued use of natural complex substances (NCS) containing acetophenone (CAS 98-86-2) in cosmetic products. Although naturally present in NCSs from different botanical families, acetophenone is mainly found in cistus oils and extracts. Acetophenone is going through the harmonised classification process under the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation with a proposed CMR1B (reprotox) classification.  Therefore, in order to continue using NCS containing acetophenone in cosmetic products, industry has to apply for an exemption by demonstrating safety as per the requirements of the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation.

The letter below includes details on the consortium formation, as well as the estimated costs for defence. Parties interested in defending continued use of NCS containing acetophenone shall contact Véronique Ernoult (veronique.ernoult@biolandes.com) by July 31, 2025.
