As Canada approaches the Joint Review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), Prime Minister Carney has announced the creation of a new Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations. (Read the press release here.) The committee will serve as a forum for expertise and strategy on all aspects of the Canada-U.S. economic relationship. While Canada still has the lowest average U.S. tariff rate with the world (85% of our trade with the U.S. remains tariff-free), the government’s aim is to preserve that advantage and to build on it.
Appointments to the Advisory Committee that have a relationship with our industry and Cosmetics Alliance include:
- Jean Charest (former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and a form Premier of Quebec) who provided CA with valuable counsel on the various member issues related to Bill 96 in Quebec.
- Dennis Darby (currently President and CEO at Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters) who served our industry extensively as a former CA Board Director, Vice-Chair, and Chair during his tenure with member company Procter & Gamble, and
- Erin O’Toole (former federal Cabinet Minister and Leader of the Conservative Party) who was formerly legal counsel with member company Procter & Gamble and worked with our association.
CA will seek to provide input and any assistance required to the Advisory Committee related to matters affecting our members and industry at large.
