Health Canada is currently seeking feedback on a new draft guidance document regarding asbestos in Canadian drinking water, with the consultation period closing on March 24, 2026. The report concludes that a formal limit (MAC) for asbestos is not necessary, as there is no consistent evidence that ingesting asbestos fibres poses a health risk; most fibres are processed and excreted by the body within 48 hours. While health risks from ingestion are low, the document encourages water authorities to monitor and gradually replace aging asbestos-cement (A-C) pipes to ensure infrastructure stability. For those concerned, conventional municipal treatment and certified home filters (like reverse osmosis) are highly effective at removing more than 99% of fibres.
