The Natural and Non-Prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD), in collaboration with the Food Directorate (FD), has determined that Sports Electrolyte Supplements (SES) will be re-classified as Supplemented Foods.
Although this work began before the Red Tape Reduction initiative, the re-classification will reduce the need for pre-market approvals for these products from the NNHPD perspective. For the Food Directorate, oversight of these products will primarily occur through post-market processes.
The attached presentation from today, meeting with Health Canada outlines the next steps for industry. It also includes information on Oral Rehydration Solutions, which will remain classified as NHPs and continue to be supported by an existing monograph and the Class III market access mechanism.
