A safety signal has been raised by the Canadian Surveillance System for Poison Information (CSSPI) and Canadian Poison Centres concerning ocular exposures to micellar water.
Individuals who got micellar water in their eyes reported significant symptoms like redness, irritation, soreness, blurred vision, and stinging. Notably, 41% of cases required referral to a Health Care Facility, with some needing urgent ophthalmology consultation.
The primary cause for these incidents was mistaking micellar water for contact lens solution (72% of cases). This information is being shared from the request of the Consumer & Hazardous Products Directorate to raise awareness and prompt consideration of mitigation measures, such as consumer education or changes to product packaging/labeling, to prevent future mix-ups.
Here is the letter from Health Canada outlining the safety signal and mitigation measures. If you have any questions or concerns please email regulatory@cosmeticsalliance.ca.
