Consulting Canadians on the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)

The Government of Canada has launched a second phase of public consultations on the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), inviting Canadians to provide their views and experiences on the agreement. This initiative is a crucial step in Canada’s preparations for the first joint review of CUSMA, which is scheduled for 2026.

CUSMA, which came into effect on July 1, 2020, replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The consultations are open until November 3, 2025. The input received will help inform Canada’s position and interests for the 2026 joint review, which will assess the agreement’s function and implementation and consider how to ensure its future robustness. The review clause in CUSMA (Article 34.7) allows the parties to take stock of the agreement’s operation and, if all three countries agree, to extend its term.
