Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Update: Sunscreens using the same base formulation as Ultra Violette Lean Screen SPF 50+ Sunscreen

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is responding to a report from CHOICE that found several sunscreens did not meet their advertised SPF. The TGA, which regulates sunscreens as therapeutic goods in Australia, states that manufacturers are legally required to have evidence supporting their SPF claims.

A recent update from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), explains that their investigation into sunscreen SPF claims is ongoing. The TGA is reviewing a large amount of data from sunscreen manufacturers which is a timely process.

The TGA acknowledges that the current in vivo (on human subjects) SPF testing method has known variability issues because it relies on human skin reactions. They are actively looking into alternative, potentially more reliable in vitro (non-human) testing methods.

The TGA confirms it will take appropriate regulatory action based on its risk-management approach.
