IFRA Information Letter n° 1235 - Tonalide - ECHA RAC Opinion as Repr. 1B adopted

On April 4th, The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) on the current regulatory situation on Geraniol (CAS 106-24-1). Geraniol, a common fragrance ingredient found in many essential oils and assessed safe by Research Institute of Fragrance Materials (RIFM)/IFRA, is facing increasing regulatory pressure. French authorities are evaluating its potential endocrine-disrupting effects in biocidal applications, while Danish authorities intend to propose a classification for potential reproductive toxicity under the Classification, Labelling & Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation by December 2025. BASF SE is actively involved in the endocrine disruption assessment, arguing against classification, and IFRA, supported by BASF, is prepared to defend geraniol’s safe use in fragrances and may prepare a SCCS dossier for cosmetics. BASF is also engaging with Danish authorities to address reproductive toxicity concerns.
