As 2026 begins, the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) is proud to announce a milestone year marking six decades of scientific excellence. Since its founding in 1966, RIFM’s mission has remained constant: advancing the independent science that ensures the safe use of fragrance ingredients worldwide.

This 60th-anniversary year serves as a platform to reflect on sixty years of progress while highlighting the innovations that will define the future of the industry.

2026 Milestone Highlights

RIFM will mark this anniversary with several key initiatives showcasing the rigor and evolution of fragrance safety:

  • Special Issue of Food & Chemical Toxicology: A dedicated anniversary publication will feature an updated RIFM Criteria Document and highlight the scientific breakthroughs that have shaped fragrance safety over the last six decades.
  • 60th Anniversary Science Symposium: RIFM will host a special symposium focusing on the latest findings driving today’s safety decisions and the emerging research guiding future methodologies.
  • The SAFER Educational Track: Launching this year, SAFER (Safety Assessment of Fragrance Exposure and Risk) is a new certified educational track. It will offer a comprehensive look at RIFM’s safety assessment process for both discrete ingredients and Natural Complex Substances (NCS).

As RIFM enters its sixth decade, it remains committed to transparency and global support for fragrance safety. These anniversary initiatives underscore the Institute’s dedication to providing the deeper insights and independent evaluations that the world relies on for safe fragrance use.
